What is Choi Kwang-Do?

Choi Kwang-Do is designed and created by Grandmaster Kwang Jo Choi, 9th Degree Black belt. Grandmaster Choi has been involved in self-defense concepts for over 40 years. Choi Kwang-Do is a relatively new martial art  (established March 2, 1987), that addresses some of the problems inherent in traditional martial arts.

How is Choi Kwang-Do different from other martial arts?

Unlike other martial arts, Choi Kwang-Do has had scientific study in the development of it's technique. Biomechanical studies have been done at several universities, which demonstrate its superiority of power generation and safety to the practitioner. In Choi Kwang-Do all the movements are performed with the body weight moving in the same direction as the punch or kick with the limb in question performing a smooth fluid follow-through. All movements done in the air are fluid and relaxed enabling the practitioner to work more aerobically without any stress to the joints.

Is Choi Kwang-Do safe?

It is one of the safest forms of martial arts training. Due to the fact that injuries generally occur when two people are sparring. Choi Kwang-Do has eliminated this practice in its training. Instead, drills are done using focus pads and air shields that allow the practitioner to develop his/her technique and power by hitting the target as hard as they want without hurting themselves or the holder.

Who would Choi Kwang-Do be suited for?

This martial art is especially suited for people who's main concern is self-defense and cardiovascular fitness. It is suited for professional people because they do not have to worry about visible injuries interfering with their normal day to day lives.

What are the benefits of Choi Kwang-Do for my child?

The major benefits for kids are increased self-confidence, improved discipline and better self-respect. Kids classes are designed to be energetic, educational and most of all fun. Students are encouraged to train and improve themselves through positive support - not intimidation.

What are the benefits of Choi Kwang-Do for adults?

The major benefits for adults are increased endurance, increased flexibility, concentration and stress reduction. Choi Kwang-Do is taught according to individual needs and level of skill. You learn an effective means of self-defense. Another benefit is having a goal to work towards (first  your black belt and then the higher degree black belt) keeps one motivated and energetic!

Doesn't all martial arts teach eastern philosophy/religion?

Not all. We have students from many different religions and beliefs. Choi Kwang-Do has three main goals for it's students:
1) Learn self-defense
2) Promote better health and fitness
3) Develop a strong mind
As part of developing a strong mind, the tenets of Choi Kwang-Do (courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and indomitable spirit) are impressed upon our students. We bow towards the flags and instructors as a sign of respect and courtesy.  For children we talk about  focusing, listening to parents and getting good grades.
